Khari Baoli has traded in spices, nuts, and dried herbs since 1650. Located near the historic Red Fort in Old Delhi, this market is recognized today as Asia's largest wholesale spice market. It moves thousands of tonnes of produce every single month.

A 17th Century Legacy

Established during the Mughal era by Fatehpuri Begum, one of Shah Jahan's wives, the market originally centered around a stepwell (Baoli) filled with saline water (Khari). Though the well is long gone, buried beneath generations of urban development, the name endures.

"To walk down Khari Baoli is to subject yourself to an olfactory assault. The air is thick with the burning tang of dried red chilies, the earthy warmth of turmeric, and the sharp sweetness of green cardamom."

The Engine of Trade

Today, ninth and tenth-generation merchants sit on elevated platforms above sacks of cumin, mace, and saffron, conducting business exactly as their ancestors did. Porters maneuver impossibly heavy wooden handcarts through impossibly narrow alleys. The chaotic energy is absolute sensory overload, but beneath it lies a meticulously organized supply chain that feeds much of North India.
